It was a cool, cloudy morning, as many have been so far in Birmingham this year. It was surprisingly comfortable for February though and when I visited this sweet family, we were able to walk around outdoors a little. This was an At-home Session. It’s always such an honor to be invited into someone’s home to document their personal lives. This couple was married on their own property about a year ago and their sweet baby was born just a few short weeks ago. They live in a secluded area, quiet and somehow cozy, even though its surrounded by broad open spaces. I think this little boy is going to have a blast growing up here. The details are so easily forgotten over time as our brains make room for new details and experiences. It’s so hard to believe you won’t remember each little wrinkle as you study your baby for hours every day, spending nearly every moment together those first few months. It’s true. Some things will stick out and forever be burned into memory, but you know what helps cement those memories? You guessed it, photography. Thank goodness for photographs! One way everyone can get involved and feel closer to our little ones is through baby wearing. It’s not only a great way to bond with our babies, it’s practical. I remember doing dishes, going on walks, and grocery shopping wearing my kiddos.
When thinking of an At-home Family Session, think of life as you know it and the sweet routines you’d like to remember. This little fella loves to have his hair washed so that’s exactly what we did. I photographed them washing his hair in the kitchen sink. He was already sleepy after our morning together, but a combination of the warm, soothing hair washing and eating knocked him right out.
I so enjoyed my time visiting the Lucias and photographing their family! They invited me, welcomed me, and shared with me their love; and now they have photographs of a fleeting moment to last a lifetime-one all parents metaphorically cling to.
