Morris Avenue has been a popular location for photography for many years. I want to offer my clients a variety of locations. One of my first questions to them is if they’d like to photograph in a natural or city setting, or both. Morris Avenue is a great location in the city for many reasons.
There are brick and wooden buildings, a few metal “walls” (which are actually garage doors, so be careful), and even walls covered in ivy certain times of the year. There’s also the Color Wall (by RedPath Creative), which runs parallel to Morris Avenue. It’s a fun spot for playful photos. (I especially love black-and-white images using the Color Wall!) I’ve photographed many families, couples, and individuals there. I even photographed a proposal once in front of it.
Morris Avenue is a long road with several blocks paved in cobblestone, or that’s what everyone thinks. The stones are actually Belgian Blocks that are a little larger and rectangular. But simply because it’s not an asphalt road tells you right away that it’s a historical spot in Birmingham. The road is picturesque and it slows traffic, which are both beneficial for great photos!
It has a number of options for backdrops. One of my favorite spots is at the very end of Morris Avenue, near 24th St. S. There is a “dead” interstate ramp. It’s no longer in use so you don’t have to worry about traffic. It’s a really unique place for photos. I’ve found my more adventurous clients seem to really like it.
I chose Morris Avenue as my location spotlight for very good reason. The secret is definitely out on this location though. Be prepared to encounter a handful of other photographers if there’s a beautiful weekend golden hour.
