Personal photography shoots are important for many reasons. I think the one that tops the list is because they remind photographers why they fell in love with their craft in the first place. The business side of being a photographer can be overwhelming and can lead to dulled inspiration.

Side note: there’s a popular, yet recently scientifically debunked theory about left and right-brained thinking. Let’s be honest, even though the theory may have been dispelled, most photographers I know (me included) certainly exhibit right-brained characteristics, meaning it comes more naturally to use our cameras than to calculate our taxes.

Personal photography shoots are also beneficial because when shared online, they show the type(s) of photography we really enjoy. The idea that the work you share is the work you’ll get more of, has been proven time and time again. It’s one way to build a visual identity. In theory, if you really want to book more weddings, you should consider creating styled shoots featuring brides or grooms or both. If you like artistic, thought-provoking, non-traditional photography, then by all means share more of that. You’ll likely attract clients that enjoy that same style.

Every time you use your camera is a chance for growth. Who wouldn’t benefit from strengthening their skills? Practice builds confidence. Confidence enhances all aspects of life, but is especially useful in running your business.

Sometimes we have an idea that we aren’t quite sure how to achieve or if the results will be as good as the idea. In my opinion, the time to experiment isn’t with your paying clients. They’ve hired you because of the work they’ve seen in your portfolio, so it isn’t really fair to use their time to try out new ideas. This doesn’t mean you can’t be a little adventurous while photographing clients. If they love your style, and your style is to take creative chances, they’ll probably appreciate a little artistic exploration. Personally, I just wouldn’t spend a lot of time trying new concepts and using my paid shoots as test shoots. I like to use personal shoots as a way to try new ideas. If those ideas are successful, then I may introduce them to clients.

Another reason personal photography shoots are important is because with every shoot, you potentially build your portfolio. Creating a rich body of work, especially work that you like, want more of, and feel confident about, is the ultimate goal.
In a nutshell, play, have fun, create! Don’t be afraid to explore and try photography concepts you’re curious about. You’re doing your clients a favor by having personal shoots. You’re strengthening your skills as a photographer and bringing fresh ideas into your business.

I love taking creative chances! Contact me to book your portrait session, especially if you’ve seen something in this post of personal work that you’d like to try. That would be fantastic!
