Community Over Competition in Photography | Bang Images

FILED IN: Information

Community over competition is a positive movement that gained traction several years ago but is still going strong, or at least I would like to think so. The concept emphasizes relationships, support, and collaboration over the idea that everyone is out for themselves.

Supporting Other Photographers

Supporting other photographers comes in many forms. On social media you may like/love, leave a comment on a post, or reshare a photographer’s post. Recommend other photographers for jobs you’re not interested in or for jobs outside of your area of expertise. Not every job is meant for you.

Another way to support other photographers is by offering advice. I’ve moderated several Facebook groups over the last decade as a way to mentor less experienced professionals. (Notice I didn’t say “younger”. I’ve learned a lot from photographers much younger than me. You have to leave your ego at the door to truly grow!) Maybe you feel you’d like a mentor yourself. There are paid mentorships if you don’t want to leave it up to chance. You can find an experienced photographer that you jibe with stylistically and consider paying them if they offer mentoring programs.

Offering honest, constructive (but kind) criticism can be one of the most helpful things you can do for someone. You may initiate their interest in improving a particular skill because of your experience and willingness to share. One way to do this is by offering to do website critiques for one another.

Collaborating with Other Photographers

Collaboration is yet another way to lift each other up, and it’s probably one of the most fun! Organizing a styled shoot with two or more photographers encourages creativity and learning. Sometimes you’ll find yourself in a situation when you thought you’d be the one leading and dropping knowledge, you’re the one benefiting the most. I’ve found that sometimes the newest photographers have the most outside-of-the box ideas because they haven’t learned the “proper” way of doing things.

Community over competition isn’t just a concept, it’s a way of life. Be the photographer who supports other photographers. It’s easier than you may think to encourage someone. We grow stronger together!
