Girls Rock Birmingham, or Girls Rock as it’s affectionately known, has been a Birmingham fixture since 2014. Lindsey Shante and Shelly Ann Edge are the founders. In this case, AI got it right when it said the purpose of Girls Rock is “to empower girls and gender-expansive youth through music.” That’s their goal in a nutshell.
As was the case with many things, the Pandemic affected Girls Rock. They were no longer able to meet in person and instead offered a virtual experience. You might imagine it wasn’t quiet the same and they were very excited to restore in-person summer camps in 2024. This time they had a new fearless leader, Susie Cousins. Susie has just as much vivacious energy as her predecessors and this awesome summer camp and showcase has returned with a heaping helping of wonderfulness!
Last summer the Girls Rock performance was at Cahaba Brewing Co., which was loads of fun. Saturn Birmingham welcomed them this summer, where the girls were able to really feel like rock stars on an actual stage where world renowned musicians have also played. Can you imagine such a thing! How empowering!
It’s been a number of years since my own daughter was a part of this incredible experience, but we remember it well! I love volunteering my time with this organization. It’s really something to witness so much raw talent and self-confidence in one place! I love photographing events and I really love supporting girls and women whenever possible.
