I am a Birmingham, Alabama, photographer with a lot of experience in photographing at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. That’s why I’ve decided to make it my first location spotlight in a series featuring some of my most frequented settings. It’s probably my most requested location and it’s no surprise! BBG as I affectionally call it, is expansive, clean, beautiful, and convenient!

Even though it’s a very popular location, and on any given weekend, you may see a dozen other photographers, it’s large enough that there’s room for all. (There are also some spots that are a little less crowded; those are often my favorites.) Although Birmingham Botanical Gardens is large, it’s not overwhelmingly so. You can walk from one end to another leisurely in 15 minutes.

Because of its size and variety of plant life, you could potentially visit multiple times and choose a different setting for your portraits each time. One of my favorite areas is the Japanese Garden with its gorgeous cherry blossoms in early spring and rich red maples in the fall. I also love the Kaul Wildflower Garden, which not only has colorful flowers, but also cool natural rock and neat woodland paths around a trickling stream. It’s incredibly peaceful.

It really goes without saying that Birmingham Botanical Gardens is beautiful! You shouldn’t take my word for it though, especially if you’re thinking of a portrait session yourself. Take a walk around and see what gets your attention. Imagine your family being photographed there.

I also love the Birmingham Botanical Gardens because it’s well-maintained and convenient. It’s really nice to have the benefit of a clean bathroom. BBG is located close to HWY 31 and between downtown Birmingham and the suburbs of the city. I suggest it to when someone wants to photograph in two locations because of its proximity to downtown. Sometimes a natural and a city setting are the recipe for the variety clients are looking for.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens is definitely a favorite for many photographers and it’s free! Perhaps you’ve visited and would like to donate to help keep this lovely non-profit organization open and thriving. It’s easy to do so by phone or online.

Photography at Birmingham Botanical Gardens is consistent all year round. Please contact me to schedule your portrait session.
