As if life as a full-time photographer and small business owner wasn’t busy enough; I decided to add another full-time job! Photography, all day, every day is kind of my mantra. If I’m not blogging, editing, photographing, or scouting locations, I’m sitting in meetings planning the next shoot, marketing, updating my website, or returning client emails. There are a lot of responsibilities in owning my own business and working as a photographer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in their Marketing and Communications Department, but I love it! Photography hugely defines me, and the fact that I get to do it in some form every day makes me really happy.
I’ve been a photographer for three decades. Bang Images had its 11th birthday on June 1st of this year. I’ll be celebrating my third anniversary as a photographer for UAB at the end of summer. This post is a collection of my favorite images from my time at UAB. Here’s a little peak into my life outside of Bang Images that truly enhances my photography skills.
Student Life
We get to photograph a large variety of subjects at UAB. One of my favorite is always going to be student life. Whether it’s a planned shoot with student models or candid images of students on campus, they are absolutely the most fun to photograph!
Events
We photograph many different events each year. Homecoming week is probably one of the busiest times. The Homecoming Parade and Gurney Derby are highly anticipated and full of energetic people to photograph! Also, everyone loves UAB’s mascot, Blaze. Children really do line up to speak to him.
I photographed the Crawfish Boil and Blazer State Fair this year. Students got to blow off some steam at the end of the spring semester and had a blast! There was a great turnout.
Commencement
You just never know which images will really resonate. The smiling graduate was used in a billboard advertisement! Imagine driving down I65 and seeing one of your images on a billboard! That was a fun surprise!
Stories & Stock Imagery
We photograph portraits for a variety of news stories. Some photos are in an online publication shared with staff, faculty, and students; and others are used in news stories for the general public. Afterwards, many of our images are stored in UAB’s digital asset library.
UAB is such an impressive academic and research institution, but did you also know they have a wonderful art department? With a brand new art facility, awesome classes, and skilled professors, UAB should be a strong consideration for art majors.
Headshots
We offer standard headshots in our studio. Sometimes we travel to various UAB locations to offer headshots as well.
Web Builds
With an institution the size of UAB, you can imagine the number of departments in different schools of education. Each of them has their own website and a need for designers and photographers to build them. Our department helps.

I’ve never felt more right about a big life decision as I do about accepting the position as a photographer in the Marketing and Communications Department at UAB. In conclusion, I was apprehensive in the beginning because of the additional responsibility and loss of freedom, but I’ve benefited in so many ways by my decision. Sometimes you just have to take the leap!
